Background of the Study
Rural electrification plays a pivotal role in modernizing agriculture by enabling the use of mechanized equipment, improved storage facilities, and digital technologies. In Nigeria, where many rural areas still suffer from unreliable or non-existent electricity supply, rural electrification initiatives launched between 2023 and 2025 have aimed to improve agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods (Okafor, 2023). The theoretical framework is based on the idea that access to electricity reduces post-harvest losses, enhances the efficiency of irrigation systems, and facilitates the adoption of advanced farming technologies. Empirical evidence indicates that countries with widespread rural electrification tend to experience higher agricultural output and improved economic conditions in rural areas (Afolabi, 2024). In Nigeria, the extension of power grids and the promotion of alternative energy sources—such as solar power—are expected to transform agricultural practices by enabling continuous operation of processing facilities, better preservation of produce, and improved communication of market information. Despite these promising developments, challenges remain in terms of infrastructure development, maintenance, and affordability. This study investigates the impact of rural electrification on agricultural productivity by analyzing changes in crop yields, mechanization levels, and overall farm income. It also examines the barriers to successful electrification and proposes strategies to overcome these challenges, thereby contributing to sustainable agricultural growth and rural development.
Statement of the Problem
Despite significant investments in rural electrification, many agricultural communities in Nigeria still experience inadequate power supply, which adversely affects productivity (Ibrahim, 2024). The primary problem is that unreliable or absent electricity limits the adoption of mechanized and modern farming techniques, leading to lower crop yields and increased post-harvest losses. Additionally, the high cost of alternative energy solutions and poor infrastructure maintenance further exacerbate these issues. The lack of a consistent power supply undermines efforts to improve storage facilities, irrigation systems, and market access through digital technologies. This persistent energy gap not only hampers agricultural productivity but also contributes to broader rural poverty and economic stagnation. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of rural electrification initiatives and identify the factors that impede their success, with the goal of proposing solutions to enhance the productivity and sustainability of the agricultural sector.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on rural electrification initiatives in Nigeria from 2023 to 2025, using energy access data, agricultural productivity reports, and field surveys. Limitations include regional differences in power infrastructure and potential challenges in isolating electrification effects from other variables.
